Maintenance Engineer
DURATION: This job is a full-time, year -round position.
WORK HOURS: Normal work hours will be 7:30 am until 3:30 pm. Monday through Friday with some flexibility. Institute and In-Service days will be required work days. School holidays will be paid days off. The work hours include an unpaid 30 minute lunch break.
LOCATION: The Chicago Campus is the primary location. The maintenance team is responsible for the care and maintenance of all buildings on the campuses of St. Mary Magdalene Parish, including St. Peter Claver Mission and St. Walter-St. Benedict School. Travel and collaboration are required. Typically, each maintenance team member will have a set of assigned building locations, with an expected partnership to maintain all buildings, especially, but not limited to, during the summer months.
DESCRIPTION: Maintenance personnel and janitorial services will support parish and school functions in interpersonal ministry and ensure the optimal functioning of building systems. This includes fire/life safety, HVAC, lighting, mechanical, etc., in all parish/mission and school facilities. In addition, they oversee groundskeeping activities, including the maintenance of sidewalks and parking areas, including the removal of snow and trash. They will make minor repairs to buildings and equipment as required, utilizing basic skills and knowledge in electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, masonry, and painting work..
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:: Performs maintenance, service, and repairs in the areas of plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry: Responsible for some regularly assigned parish and school cleaning duties (including parish hall bathrooms, school accident clean-ups, lunchroom, etc.), and may be requested to clean and prepare general labor and tasks such as sweeping, trash removal, cleaning. all tasks are to be performed with attention to detail. This includes areas that may need to be cleaned daily, weekly, and monthly; Replenishes toiletry supplies and sets up for activities in the church, school and parish facilities;
Maintain equipment for tasks, including hand-held tools, power tools and machinery (including up to 3, 5, and 10 -year projections of maintenance);
Knowledge of use and maintenance of power and hand equipment used on the job;
Coordinates outside contractors' routine service work for preventive maintenance: including but not limited to safety inspections, pest management, mechanical preventative maintenance on facility systems, and repairs beyond the ability of the maintenance team;
Care of air conditioning window units, replacement of batteries for smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and clocks, and light bulbs;
Primarily responsible for performing on-site routine services, including installation, maintenance, and repair of the parish and school buildings, including surfaces, rooms, hallways, restrooms, stairways, floors, etc., and other duties as assigned;
Assures the optimal functioning of building systems, including fire/life safety, HVAC, mechanical, etc.;
Acquisition-including materials required for facility upgrades and upkeep of grounds in consult with the Pastor/Principal/Business Manager:
Support seasonal required landscaping of grounds and snow removal/salting to ensure safe conditions for all parishioners, school personnel, and visitors.
May be given other assignments and projects consistent with the position's responsibility lebel and general duties.
· REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Math and English, skills are required. High school graduate, GED or equivalent preferred . Experience in maintenance or a related area preferred. Ability to communicate in spoken word in Spanish preferred an English and written English required. Knowledgeable and proactive in facility procedures and safety measures, and grounds maintenance. Basic plumbing, carpentry, and painting, machine servicing, or electrical knowledge is required. Familiarity in basic technology skills preferred; use of emails required.
Ability to coordinate efforts among individuals, work collaboratively with others, and have a strong service-oriented attitude. Support the Director of Facilites in supervising and evaluating the school's maintenance an third-party vendors. Together with the Director of Facilities, ensure that scheduled preventive maintenance and fire safety procedures are in place and performed in accordance with industry standards. Assist Director in determining the need for outside assistance on repair issues and coordinate work to be completed.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid Driver's license. Lift, push/pull 80lbs. Climb ladders and stairs as necessary, including accessing roof structures. Availability to work overtime as needed, some Religious Holidays require you to be present for services/activities. Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.

PROCESS FOR HOURLY WORK & OVERTIME

Full-time expectation is 40 hours per week. School day Hours are generally expected to be 7:00 am to 3:30 pm M-F, with an unpaid lunch break of 30 minutes daily.. Lunch is to be taken during the work day. Summer hours should also be regularly scheduled, but the day may be adjusted to meet the demands of the summer maintenance plan.

At times, conditions may require coming in early or leaving late. (For instance, meeting a repair person, addressing an emergency issue, weather-related snow clearing, etc.). In this event inform the pastor or principal that hours must be adjusted to maintain 40 hours per week.

Overtime approval must be requested from the Pastor or Principal. Overtime must have prior approval

Travel for work purposes will be reimbursed at the State Travel Reimbursement Rate.

Travel to locations should be thoroughly planned and minimized to ensure fiduciary responsibility, including being on campus as often as possible.

The Director of Facility will act as the liaison for pastor and principal to ensure purchases and supplies are deemed appropriate. They will also direct the maintenance engineer on duties assigned.

Teachers and staff may make maintenance requests for repairs and requisitions (for instance, an additional shelf or desk). The Maintenance Engineer is expected to consult with the principal regarding approval or disapproval of requests outside of standard requests.

The maintenance person will determine the site specific duties and is expected to collaborate on the planning and executing of facilites maintenance .

When leaving a site, inform the nearest Administrative Assistance or the Principal.

It is expected that the maintenance engineer plans their time to respond to the parish and school maintenance needs. Flexibility and responsive approaches, as well as maintenance priority planning, are expected.
